Second Life, is it a Game?

[2011/07/18 19:16]  Barbed Wire (celesteduke): One of your avatars has recently been accused of deception and dishonesty, how do you respond to that?

[2011/07/18 19:16]  herminetic: Well firstly, let me say that i don't think that I am alone in this, a lot of people create alts, which is perfectly normal and allowed. An alt isn't necessarily going to be "you" per se, I mean what would be the point of them? You aren't going to make another "you". I think people have to be a bit naive to imagine that all the avatars that they meet out there are real, many are just another aspect of a person and not necessarily their true "self"
When i created my alt, i had a specific character in mind, i was fascinated by the personage that Marilyn Monroe played in the movie The Seven Year Itch, and i think that american males were particularly taken with this image of the girl next door, a dumb blond if you like, but charming and funny and most importantly very sexy. Today we have labeled the dumb blond as being a bimbo and this is not where i wanted to go with her. My blond is secretly very intelligent :)

[2011/07/18 19:18]  Barbed Wire (celesteduke):  Well isn't there a danger that someone is going to be attracted to your avi and perhaps even fall in love with her?

[2011/07/18 19:18] herminetic: Well early on in any new conversation with her, i try to explain that she isn't real you know, like maybe she is from outer space or a robot mannequin that has escaped, perhaps all alts should wear warning tags... Danger this avi is not real!

[2011/07/18 19:20]  Barbed Wire (celesteduke):  Well what is the point of creating an avatar that is a fictional character?

[2011/07/18 19:20] herminetic: I think that we are all terribly conditioned by our surroundings in real life, we are forced to be who we are  by everything around us, our friends out family our job. we cannot not suddenly change and be someone else, something else, we can't cut our hair or become a nudist. Real life just doesn't let you do that, there are unwritten rules that prevent you from suddenly one day wearing green lipstick... i mean some people do it but then we know who they are, and we can expect that they will be doing that sort of thing all the time and thats how they make their mark, but generally speaking the "normal" person doesn't and he is stuck in one  image and that image isn't always what they really want to be. We are sometimes oppressed by all this, being the person that everyone else expects us to be. If we escape and go traveling by ourselves in some foriegn country we have a chance be ourselves and it is a wonderful freedom once you experience it. SL is like that, a voyage to a different country where you can be anyone you want. The point if you like, and this is what i am just discovering, is that you can gain a new insight into who you are really, you can expand your self knowledge, it isn't all good but it is certainly an eye opener.

[2011/07/18 19:24]  Barbed Wire (celesteduke):  Perhaps this is why you are getting this flack about not being honest?

[2011/07/18 19:24] herminetic:I know i have caused a few people who imagine that my avi is real, some confusion and I am truly sorry if I have have hurt them, which was never my intention. However i must also say that some people that imagine themselves as being "honest" in SL are not honest, especially to themselves, they make themselves a fancy or beautiful avatar, and then start imagining that they are themselves beautiful and start parading around and thinking themselves to suddenly be something special... you see them in their fabulous bodies, big muscles or big breasts,  but is this honest?

[2011/07/18 19:26]  Barbed Wire (celesteduke):So what is the bottom line?

[2011/07/18 19:26] herminetic:We are in the virtual world of Second Life, where people can wear fur, tails, or pointed ears and be fictional characters if they want, it is a world of fantasy! Please don't try to drag the real world into it, if you need honesty and real, go back to rl and get a life!
